Joining The Handful

General Information

The choir is 20-25 strong, of a size that can sing works for double choir. Singers will therefore be able to hold what is effectively a solo line within a complex polyphony.

The choir rehearses weekly in term time, and gives 4-5 concerts in a year. Rehearsals, from 7:45 to 9:30pm, are held on Tuesday evenings and we normally rehearse at Prior Park College in Bath.

It is expected that singers will work to ensure that they are note confident outside of the rehearsal schedule, as the latter focuses on the musical and technical issues. While the rehearsals are highly focused, the group does take time out for social events, and keeps the local pub busy after rehearsal on a Tuesday evening!

Singers will typically have experience of singing in smaller as well as larger groups of singers, and may indeed have performed solo repertoire. They will have a good standard of sight-reading ability, be able to blend their voice to a smaller a capella choir as well as a willingness to step up for solos if necessary.

If you are interested in joining The Handful, do come and join us in a rehearsal to check us out! If we have any vacancies, there will then be an opportunity to have a formal audition, at which the Musical Director will listen to a prepared solo to assess your voice as well as the fit with the choir. Choir members pay a sub of £15 per month which supports the running of the choir during the year. However, if you are a student, or would find it difficult to pay, we are very understanding of this and happy to work out a compromise. If you are interested in joining us, please contact us for the next steps!

The repertoire is very varied, from a capella medieval masses to those in a more modern idiom. The choir also enjoys performing lighter works. Performances include a cappella works, those with a piano or organ accompaniment and larger works, typically accompanied by a chamber orchestra.
