The Handful seeks applications from composers for a commission to be performed in their 2020 Spring concert. The Handful's 2019-20 programme explores various different themes, often around the ideas of rhythm and dance, but also examining music's political relevance. The concert on 25th April 2020 at St Mary’s church, Bathwick, is a culmination of these themes. The choir will be performing:
Missa Ego flos campi - Padilla
Cantos Sagrados - MacMillan
Lo, the Full Final Sacrifice - Finzi
We wish to commission a piece of 9-12 minutes' duration which will sit alongside this repertoire. The themes explored by these pieces include: political oppression, religious devotion, self-sacrifice, religious joy and celebration, and composers are encouraged to engage with these and any other themes they think are relevant to the brief in a creative way.
The commission should be suitable for performance by a choir of c.24 amateur musicians with good sight-reading, musicianship and vocal technique. Reasonable divisions within parts and soloists from within the choir may be employed, and the commission may include organ accompaniment. Other small-scale accompaniment will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
The successful composer will receive a commissioning fee of £750. The performance may be recorded.
Applications should include:
- an up-to-date CV
- 3 examples of previous work, preferably for choir and/or voice, preferably in both score and audio format
- some initial ideas and/or sketches for the commission. These initial ideas must include some explanatory text, giving an outline of the composer's current thinking on the piece's overall shape (text, structure, etc) and may also include some musical ideas/motifs, full examples of texts, structural diagrams etc.
The Committee and Musical Director may arrange interviews with some or all applicants following the closing of applications if necessary, and the Committee and Musical Director reserve the right to contact individual applicants to seek clarification or elaboration on certain aspects of their application.
Applications should be made to email@example.com and any queries may be sent to the same email address.
The deadline for applications is 22nd June 2019.
